Gallery showcases professor and painter Gerry Perrino’s 25-year career at Salve
POSTED ON FEBRUARY 28, 2024
Gerry Perrino, associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History, has taught painting for a quarter of a century to thousands of Salve students. This legacy is being highlighted with the opening of an art exhibit in the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery entitled “Empirical Evidence: Gerry Perrino – Painter & Mentor,” which runs through March 24.
Gerry Perrino has taught in a number of art programs, including Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Wesleyan University, where he was the John Frazer Visiting Artist for two years. In total, he’s been teaching 41 years, but more than half of that time has been spent at his beloved Salve Regina.
“It’s a special place,” Perrino said. “Twenty-five years has been a blur of convocations, commencements, and syllabi — but it’s never been a blur of faces. I see a former student from Salve Regina, and I know them all. Salve is a big family, and you don’t forget family.”
Mr. Perrino has exhibited widely over the past 30 years and is represented by Hallspace, a well-respected gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. His work is on display in numerous public and private collections, and his still life arrangements of toys and miniatures craft visual narratives that are at once playful, poetic and political.
“Critics see the artwork, and they get it,” he said. “I use humor to engage, the titles are funny, but the messages are often about social justice and that we have to do better as a society.”
Reoccurring themes in Perrino’s work include the tragedy of war and the importance of feminism. In multiple paintings, he uses toy soldier-type figurines to depict a human narrative, an idea he got when he found some toy solders while clearing out a neighbor’s garage years ago.“You’re trying to express something to human beings within the still objects, and there’s nothing that a human being will relate to more in artwork than the human form,” he said. “Using these figurines injected the human form into my still lives, and the doors just opened — because it was a potent way to attract attention, and the narratives just started to come together.”
PERRINO’S STUDENTS
Along with highlights of Perrino’s most recent work, paintings of fourteen Salve alumni from across the country are on display. While Perrino has taught thousands of students, he had specific criteria for the artists selected for this show — including that each is active in the visual arts and has carved out a unique career path since graduating from Salve.
“Some went on to pursue a terminal degree in painting and others are professionally engaged as artists,” he described. “Some have become teachers and others work in art museums. I’m so proud of our art alumni in general.”
As a professor of painting and drawing, Perrino said that he engages his students in the problems of visual thinking and teaches them how to understand and interpret empirical evidence.“‘Empirical evidence’ has clear, scientific roots,” said Perrino. “In art, it represents the idea that artists glean truth only after keen study and analysis of their environments.”
A close study of one’s environment is also why Perrino is so adamant about the benefits of a liberal arts education.
“I was the product of a liberal arts curriculum — and I think that’s tremendously important, as opposed to a professional curriculum where kids get into a silo of painting and that’s all they do,” he explained. “I tell students, ‘That sociology class you’re not crazy about might inform your artwork in 10 years, so try to pay attention. It’s worth it. You get ideas from those other classes.'”
From foundation drawing to advanced painting, Perrino inspires new and authentic relationships between teacher and student — helping each person he teaches find their own voice.
“I’m remarkably proud of the fact there’s no one in this show whose work resembles mine,” said Perrino. “That’s something that we try to foster here in the art department. Students have to find themselves, they have to be themselves.”

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Empirical Evidence: Gerry Perrino – Painter & Mentor. This is a special alumni exhibition organized around the teachings and paintings of Gerry Perrino, professor of painting at Salve Regina University. This group exhibition highlights Perrino’s most recent work and the paintings of fourteen former students from across the country.
Gerry Perrino is a painter, an image maker, and a storyteller. He works with still life arrangements of toys and miniatures to craft visual narratives that are at once playful, poetic, and political. His oil paintings draw the viewer into a meticulously rendered metaphoric world of staged figures, signs, and props.
As a professor of painting and drawing, Perrino engages his students in the problems of visual thinking. He teaches them how to understand and interpret empirical evidence. From foundation drawing to advanced painting, Perrino inspires new and authentic relationships between teacher and student, observation and imagination, art and life. This exhibition reflects on this unique learning process in the visual arts and celebrates the study of painting at Salve Regina University over the past twenty-five years. This exhibition brings together the artwork of the following alumni that Perrino mentored.

Spell Check at Parlor Gallery
by Steve Grey
March 20, 2015Parlor Gallery, located in New Jersey, is ready to present their latest group exhibition to the world. Nineteen artists will have works exhibited in the new group exhibition at Parlor Gallery, entitled Spell Check. The show has been curated with the theme of text, characters and words being essential to the works of art on show. This new group exhibition at Parlor Gallery will feature a number of artists who have previously exhibited with the gallery, alongside a range of newcomers showcasing their text based artworks. Spell Check will include a range of artists who work in different mediums, from street art to sign painters, whose work is strongly linked with text and typography within their artworks. Parlor Gallery aims to showcase innovative works by new and established artists and curate pop-up exhibitions and participate in art fairs such as SCOPE Miami and SCOPE New York.
Spell Check Text & Typography
The Spell Check group exhibition at Parlor Gallery explores the world of words with a group of artists using text and typography within their artworks. Words form an important part in our understanding of the world around us, it is part of our human nature to try and interpret the written word whether or not we understand the meaning of the words or the language they are presented in. Words affect us in many ways, touching our psyche depending on how and where those texts are presented to us; this can also alter the meaning of those same words. The group exhibition at Parlor Gallery takes text as a starting point and presents the results in a variety of styles, from the artistic visions of Max Rippon and Nora Sands to the graphic styling of Keith Scharwath and Brooke Holloway, through to the appropriated images of Mark Goede with added text. If you have a liking for all things text based take a look at the work of Daniele Tozzi, aka Pepsy, in Word Play and the work of Ben Eine in his Heartfelt exhibition.
Spell Check at Parlor Gallery
Within the Spell Check group exhibition at Parlor Gallery, the viewer will find an amazing array of artworks exploring themes of text, typography and calligraphy. The nineteen artists exhibiting all have their own distinct styles within the area of text based works including the fascinating work of Barcelona based artist Max Rippon, who has gained much acclaim for his often stunning studio and mural works that play on the use of words, more of which you can explore in the Extracts With No Romance article. Pablo Power will exhibit some of his beautifully textured and layered images that concern themselves with the idea of patterns and history, wonderful examples of his work can be viewed in the A Circle Unbroken at No Romance article on his recent solo exhibition. The lost objects of Hyland Mather, aka X-O, take text into a different direction, with geometric assemblages that are usually formed from found objects, more of which can be seen in Balancing Act, a joint exhibition with Amanda Marie. Spell Check at Parlor Gallery offers a perfect opportunity for lovers of typography to immerse themselves in a world of words and texts from nineteen fascinating and wide ranging artists.

DON'T BE SCAD | INTERLUDE
The Rymer Gallery has become kind of a home away from home for the Savannah College of Art and Design's grad students, alumni and faculty. Interlude is a new exhibit of work that is being billed as the "second annual" show featuring work from the SCAD-ellites, and until Nashville materializes an MFA visual arts program of our own, we're happy to have 'em. Curated by Rymer's Tonia Trotter, this show features painting and sculpture by Tony and Margy Rich, Christopher Priore, Masumi Nyuhi and Nora Mulheren, who seems poised to steal the show. Mulheren's detailed paintings put gouache to paper to convincingly render the crumpled pages of discarded fashion magazine ads, effectively evoking both the obsessive allure and the built-in obsolescence of designer culture.Opening reception 6-9 p.m. at The Rymer Gallery. Studio Visit Volume 52
The competition culminating in Volume 52 of Studio Visit Magazine occurred in mid-2023, with the publication released in 2024, marking a significant milestone in a mission to empower artists and foster a community of creatives. Studio Visit Magazine was initially introduced in 2008 to cater to the evolving needs of artists, providing a platform for them to showcase their work and connect with like-minded individuals. In today's digital landscape, where visual information abounds, it's increasingly challenging for artists to stand out. However, through a rigorous jurying process, Studio Visit strives to provide a carefully curated selection of exceptional artwork, highlighting the diversity and talent of contemporary artists. Having one's art reproduced in print carries a unique weight and significance that digital platforms cannot replicate. Interestingly, despite the rise of digital media, printed matter is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, with independent bookstores thriving once again.
Francine Weiss, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Chief Curator at the Newport Art Museum, expertly juried Volume 52, selecting 156 outstanding artists from a pool of 632 applicants. Her choices reflect a broad spectrum of artistic perspectives, accurately capturing the complexity and diversity of our contemporary world. The featured artists hail from diverse backgrounds, with some being self-taught and others holding graduate degrees. By making Studio Visit Magazine available digitally and internationally, is an aim to share these incredible works with the widest possible audience, inspiring connection, creativity, and growth. On page 71, Nora Sands' challenges the unattainable ideals portrayed in fashion, highlighting the impact on self-perception and the fleeting nature of the objects that fuel these desires. Sands' work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-reflection and the need to redefine our values and priorities.
